THE EDITOR, Sir:
I HAVE observed that Mr. Pearnel Charles has been endorsed by some of his parliamentary colleagues to contest the leadership of the Jamaica Labour Party. Inspite of current poll results showing Mr. Charles lagging behind in support from a wide cross section of persons, he nevertheless persists in his quest for leadership.
Analysing Mr. Charles' chances, one cannot dismiss his persistence and deep vision of accomplishment if elected. In looking at his aspirations, he mentioned that 20 per cent of the national budget would be allocated to education, but he has not mentioned how he would move the economy toward growth and prosperity with a more educated society.
I would like to hear from Mr. Charles, how he would deal with issues such as crime, health, transportation, manufacturing and other important issues affecting Jamaicans.
On the other hand, we have not heard his views on foreign affairs, issues as the CCJ, CSME, et al. Apart from grass root appeal, he must demonstrate that he has the mettle to transform into a meaningful contender for leadership, recognising that his contenders Mr. Bruce Golding and Mr. Audley Shaw are sound candidates who are articulate and possess intellectual savvy to grasp complex issues. Despite some perceived shortcomings, Mr. Charles might still be able to garner enough support to pull it off.
I am, etc.,
