ASSESSMENT RECOVERIES Limited (ARL) is the local company set up to collect demurrage and detention on cargo containers shipped to Jamaica on behalf of shipping lines. The company officially started operations yesterday. Below we continue with information on aspects of the company.
How can I find out how much I owe for demurrage and detention?
You can find out at the same time you call to get your storage and wharfage charges, or by calling ARL at 1-888-ARL-INFO.
Will ARL be giving credit?
No, ARL will not offer credit.
What if I do not pay my demurrage and detention charges?
You will be required to pay all charges due before you can move the container from the wharf. These charges include demurrage and a deposit (the equivalent of four days) against future detention.
Will I receive a refund if a portion of the detention deposit is not used?
Yes, you will receive a refund from ARL. However, if the deposit does not cover the actual detention charges you will be expected to pay the difference.
Where do I collect my refund or pay the difference on detention charges?
ARL will issue refunds at the Newport West office. All payments should be made at Kingston Wharves or at the ARL offices.
How can I contact ARL?
ARL is located in the Shipping Association of Jamaica Building at 4 Fourth St, Newport West. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Call 923-3491 or 1-888-ARL-INFO or email arl@jamports.com.
Remember: The quicker the container is cleared, unloaded and returned the lower the detention and demurrage charges will be. Low turnaround time = low charges.
