Hyde apologises for missing Haiti game
published: Tuesday | August 10, 2004

By Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

AHEAD OF Jamaica's upcoming confrontation with the United States on August 18 at the National Stadium, Reggae Boyz' 'prodigal son' Micah Hyde has announced he would like to return to the fold.

In a letter to the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) and the entire country, Hyde has apologised for missing the game between Jamaica and Haiti, calling his absence "a misunderstanding".

"I am a proud Jamaican and love wearing the colours of my country, so I once again ask you and the JFF to accept my apology as I am a professional and always conduct myself as one. I want to be part of the team that qualifies for the World Cup so my services are at the JFF's disposal if and when they need it," he wrote.

Hyde explained in the letter that at the time, he was a free agent and therefore needed to find a club.

The letter went on to imply that his intention was not to miss the game. However, his meetings with clubs that his agent had set up for him had run longer than they were expected to and by the time he was able to contact the JFF he was told that he had one hour to catch a flight back to Jamaica.

He went on to state that he tried his best to make it but missed the flight.

The midfielder further stated that he had informed members of the JFF staff about his situation, but neglected to mention which members he was referring to.

At the time, JFF President Crenston Boxhill had been particularly perturbed by the midfielder's disappearance, a situation for which he had no explanation, and didn't seem to be in a forgiving mood when it had happened.

TREASON

"That kind of behaviour is tantamount to treason abandoning your country in the middle of war. There is always space and room in one's heart for understanding and forgiveness but this would be very difficult," Boxhill was quoted as saying.

That statement came on the back of rumours that Hyde had gone to Florida on holidays, a fact which incensed the JFF boss even more.

"I have not been able to sit down with the player yet, but if what I am hearing is true, that he went to Florida on holidays, it would be very difficult for me to agree with him playing for Jamaica again as long as I am president," he said.
