A matter of grammar
published: Saturday | August 14, 2004

THE EDITOR: Sir

I WENT to the Jamaican-German Automotive School (JAGAS) some time ago to have some work done on my car and saw a sign board posted there that reads: 'Smoking of ganja and other illegal drugs are prohibited'.

I pointed out that there was a grammatical error and suggested that the sign could be amended to read instead: 'Smoking of ganja and the use of other illegal drugs are prohibited'. I was assured that the matter would be brought to the attention of the person in charge and subsequently learnt that this was done.

I had occasion to go again to JAGAS recently. It was by then several months after my first visit. I was deeply disappointed to discover that the sign with its error in elementary grammar was still prominently displayed in what is a national tertiary educational/training institution. Surely, it cannot take much to have the sign corrected or removed.

The error is perhaps a small detail, but doesn't the response (or lack thereof) speak profoundly to an attitude that leaves much to be desired on the part of those on whom responsibility rests?

I am, etc.,

M. JACKSON
