published: Saturday | August 14, 2004

By Glenroy Sinclair and Lisa McKay, Gleaner Reporters

AT LEAST 16 persons were murdered in separate incidents between Thursday night and yesterday in the hotbed of Spanish Town, St. Catherine and sections of the Corporate Area.

This has now pushed the country's murder toll past the 850 mark. It is alleged that an upsurge of shooting between the 'One Order' and 'Clansman' gangs in Spanish Town, have resulted in the death of four persons and three others hospitalised with gunshot wounds.

Reports are that the latest victim was gunned down in broad daylight in the March Pen Road area of the old capital. Prior to that, about 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, three men were attacked and shot by men travelling in a motor car, in the Cumberland Road area.

Dead are Alton Allwood, 29, and Clive Smith, 37. According to the police, the third person, a 36-year-old man has since been hospitalised. About 3:40 a.m. yesterday gunmen travelling in a motor car killed another man in Spanish Town. Police later identified the man as Delroy Williams, 46.

PLAYING DOMINOES

Preliminary investigation has suggested that Williams and two other men were playing dominoes when they came under attack. The two men sustained bullet wounds and were also hospitalalised.

Over in the Maxfield Avenue, Gem Road, Sunlight Street area of Kingston, two men were shot and killed hours apart. About 8:45 a.m. yesterday, police reported that Winston White was killed along Lyndhurst Cresent by gunmen.

About two hours later, the gun struck again killing Gary Hall, who is otherwise known as 'Gary Ice'. He was killed by gunmen in the Maxfield Avenue area. The police believed that both murders could be linked to an ongoing fued in the area.

Corporal Troy Anderson of the Constabulary Communication Network confirmed that the body of an unidentified man was found with gunshot wounds along Gordon Road, in the Admiral Town area of Kingston.

Elswhere, the body of a 37-year-old fast food supervisor, Joan Palmer, was found on Manning's Hill Road. The police said Miss Palmer had lived in the past at Plum Lane, off White Hall Avenue.

BODY DUMPED

The police are of the view that she was killed elswhere and her body dumped where it was found.

"The body was neatly placed on the road, with hands on the belly, plus based on the wounds, there were not enough blood at the scene to suggest that she was killed there," said a sub-officer who is close to the investigations.

The lawmen further reported that Granville Bryan was shot and killed in Condram Hill, Clarendon, Thursday night by gunmen. Another man, Melleto Johnson, 19, was killed by gunmen at Haylesfield Road, Clarendon.

Errol McKenzie, a 38-year-old of Irish Pen, Spanish Town, St. Catherine, was gunned down in Braeton Meadows Thursday night by gunmen. Reports are that he was killed while outside a bar.

Over in Rockfort, Kingston, Gary Foster, alias 'Gutu Blacks' of Rusden Road, was at a friend's house when he was shot and killed.

In Ocho Rios, St. Ann, a 14-year student, Joshua Whyte, was stabbed and killed, allegedly, by his 15-year-old cousin, who has since been arrested and charged with murder.
