St Ann gears up for heritage festival
published: Monday | August 16, 2004

By Devon Evans, Gleaner Writer

OCHO RIOS, St. Ann:

PREPARATIONS ARE now in high gear for the staging of the first ever St. Ann Heritage Festival tomorrow at Lawrence Park in St. Ann's Bay.

The event, which will coincide with the annual Marcus Garvey birthday salute, will also be part of the St. Ann homecoming celebrations taking place throughout the month of August, dubbed St. Ann Heritage Month.

Custos of St. Ann, Radcliffe Walters, who is the head of the organising committee for the festival, said the aim of the event is to showcase St. Ann's heritage and its finest sons and daughters, ranging from Garvey to current Scotiabank head, William Clarke, and JDF Chief of Staff, Rear Admiral Hardley Lewin.

OUTLINE OF EVENTS

Norma Walters of the St. Ann Civic Affairs Committee, in giving an outline of the events, said that while other parishes have been focusing on food, St. Ann had decided to lead the way with heritage and culture.

Ms. Walters said that tomorrow's activities include the staging of the first ever Marcus Garvey Lecture, to be delivered by Vice Chancellor of the UWI, Professor Rex Nettleford.

The other events for the day will be storytelling and displays on Garvey, and a street parade.

Ms. Walters said the events will get under way at midday and that the grounds of Lawrence Park will be decked out with foodstalls and display booths.

Another highlight of the day will be the launching of a fund by Custos Walters in aid of the Marcus Garvey Study Centre .
