Lara the fastest to 10,000
published: Monday | August 16, 2004

MANCHESTER, England (AP):

WEST INDIES captain Brian Lara became the fastest player to reach 10,000 runs in Test cricket yesterday.

The 35-year-old left hander scored the seven runs he needed in the West Indies' second innings against England in the third Test at Old Trafford.

Lara hit his first ball for three and his second for four. He was then dismissed by Andrew Flintoff to second slip.

Australian greats and former captains Allan Border (11,174) and Steve Waugh (10,927), and Indian star Sunil Gavaskar (10,122) achieved the feat before Lara. Lara, in his 111th Test and 195th innings, was faster than all three, though.

Gavaskar, the right-handed opener, had been first to 10,000 and the previous fastest. It took him 124 Tests and 212 innings.

Left-hander Border needed 136 matches and 235 innings, while right-hander Waugh took 156 matches and 244 innings.
