Let us follow Jody-Ann's example
published: Friday | August 20, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHAT A great contrast, that heroic woman Jody-Ann Hamilton who wrestled a gun from an armed criminal, to that so-called political leader Olivia 'Babsy' Grange who declared her association with a purportedly leading criminal gang member by helping him to secure a motor vehicle, driven by slain Oliver Smith, purportedly leader of the notorious 'One Order' gang. That criminal who threatened the lives of the Hamilton family should be hunted down by the police, found, tried and given the maximum available punishment.

The time is now right for the entire nation be inspired by the heroic deed of that beautiful lady to rise against the criminals and their supporters wherever they are. It should also be the occasion for a great mass opposition to the scores of corrupt politicians, businessmen, cops, etc. and all those who have been reaping rewards from oppressing the Jamaican people for so long. Only such a mass movement of Jamaicans can deal with the current despicable and shameful situation where armed criminals on the street and various political leaders sitting in Parliament have robbed Jamaicans of their freedom.

There is no freedom in Jamaica as long as this situation exists. Freedom does not mean the existence of more than one political party or whether the American White House or UK parliament recognise you or not. Freedom can only have meaning if the Jamaican people can sleep in their beds at night without fear.

Let's all reflect on that. Jamaicans still have to win their freedom. What exists in Jamaica today is slavery. It is the criminal elements who should live in fear, not the honest, long-suffering Jamaican people. Jody-Ann Hamilton not only fought for her child and family, she acted for all the children and families throughout Jamaica. Let us show her she is not alone.

I am, etc.,
