The fate of Sabina Park
published: Friday | August 20, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

SUBSEQUENT TO the awarding of the Yellow Package in Cricket World Cup 2007 to Jamaica, I have been trying to determine the fate of Sabina Park in the aftermath.

Whether or not I agree with the decision re 'Greenfields' and the opening ceremony, I am nevertheless concerned with how much it will cost to make it a suitable venue and consequently how much of the budget, for the package will be left for the refurbishing of Sabina Park.

From all the reports appearing in the press, very little will be done. We understand that new and adequate press facilities will have to be made available and that the players' dressing room facilities will be upgraded. An electronic scoreboard is a must and the provision of 5-10,000 temporary seats is a condition.

What else may we expect - a coat of paint perhaps?

This begs the question: will this satisfy the ICC and if not, are we in danger of losing the Yellow Package?

When this is over will we have lost the opportunity to avail ourselves of the legacy of a real first class cricketing facility or will we end up with the worst in the Caribbean?

I am, etc.,

H.W. SHARP
