Place more on educating our youths
published: Friday | August 20, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

AS JAMAICANS and Garveyites around the world celebrate the anniversary of the birth (17.8.1887) of our first National Hero, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, we should reminisce about his mission to remove the mental shackles from our minds and to restore the black man's pride. Like Marcus Garvey and the other National Heroes who have been honoured, it is the same cause for which they had fought in the early years, that we as a people find ourselves in the 21st century struggling for.

As a people, we are still awaiting the introduction of the teachings of Marcus Garvey in our school curriculum.

At the same time, more emphasis should be placed on educating our children to tertiary level. Too many of our youngsters are graduating from school semi-literate. Why do our people have to go through so much hassle to get a loan from the Student Loan Bureau? After 42 years of independence, one of our nation's chief aims should be to get the masses of people better educated.

I am etc.,
