Sandals Negril hosts tourism-centred school programme
published: Friday | August 20, 2004

SOME 35 students, mainly undergraduates from educational institutions islandwide, are this year enrolled in the Summer Holiday Job Scheme at Sandals Negril Beach Resort and Spa, maintaining the 16th consecutive year of this Community Outreach and Tourism in Schools Programme by the resort.

Rodcliffe Robertson, human resources and training manager at the resort, said that the annual programme is being run with the students being afforded stints from a minimum of three weeks and a maximum in some cases of up to eight weeks, which started from July 5 and will end October 1.

"The students have been placed in practically all different departments at the resort where applicable and where there is a need or demand, and based on their specific areas of study, especially the tertiary students," he explained. "Since the programme started in 1989, some 1,000 students have benefited, with some eventually gaining employment at Sandals Negril or other hotels in the group, and who are still here," he continued.

"The programme was designed to provide an opportunity for the students to familiarise themselves with actual job tasks and real situations in the hospitality industry and also the chance to earn a stipend during their holidays," added Carl Hendriks, general manager, who fully supports the programme and is excited about its growth and the benefits to the students on a whole for their future careers development.
