Gunmen release kidnapped teen
published: Saturday | August 21, 2004

THE 17-YEAR-OLD girl who was kidnapped from her home in the inner-city community of Grants Pen, St. Andrew, by gunmen on Tuesday night, was released yesterday, according to the Constabulary Communi-cation Network (CCN), the communications arm of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

The young girl, who is said to be a student at the University of the West Indies School of Continuing Studies, was found in the Kingston 8 area, the CCN said, without giving details.

ILLEGAL AK-47

She was reportedly kidnapped after the 'owners' of an illegal AK-47 assault rifle, which was seized by the police during an operation in the area, allegedly claimed that the teenager was responsible for informing the police about the location of the gun.

The gunmen reportedly demanded $250,000 from the family of the girl as compensation for the weapon.

However, the police have maintained that the girl and her family had nothing to do with the seizure of the high-powered rifle. The find was made solely on "good searching technique and reliable equipment," the police said.

An officer of the CCN said the girl was released in good health and was staying with family members.

It is not certain if the captor's demands were met. The Constant Spring police are said to be conducting further investigations into the incident.
