Young Boyz go for clean sweep
published: Wednesday | August 25, 2004

By LeVaughn Flynn, Staff Reporter

JAMAICA WILL be looking to close out the first round of the qualifying games for the 2005 World Youth Football Championships on top as they play their final game today against Bermuda at the Spanish Town Prison Oval at 6:00 p.m.

Antigua and Barbuda and St. Lucia play in the curtain-raiser at 4:00 p.m.

Jamaica top the four-team group with six points after a 12-0 hiding of Antigua and Barbuda on Saturday and a 2-0 win over St. Lucia on Monday. If Jamaica succeed in sweeping Group B they will play Haiti, the winner of Group C, in a home-and-away series next month.

So far, Jamaica have been successful in their bid for a spot in next year's championships in the Netherlands. Jamaica last qualified for the World Youth Championships in 2001 where they reached the second round.

POTENT FRONT LINE

Richard West has scored five goals in two games and Luton Shelton has notched four to lead a potent Jamaica frontline against Bermuda. The opponents are 1-1 losing their first game 2-0 against St. Lucia and beating Antigua and Barbuda 2-1.

Bermuda hardly seem a threat to Jamaica. Of the three teams, Coach Wendell Downswell was most concerned about St. Lucia and his boys dismissed them without much trouble.

The young Boyz had a training session yesterday in preparation for today's game and Downswell said he would be making some changes for today's game.

"We definitely will be making some changes," Downswell said.

"Based on the training session, we'll give everyone a chance to play. We want to see the depth of the team and see who works best where. We don't want to concentrate on a specific group of players.

"We want to utilise the full complement of the team because there will be times when we have to change the starting line-up," he said.
