FLOOD RELIEF items donated by Alumina Partners of Jamaica Limited (Alpart), are now being distributed to persons in St. Elizabeth, who were affected by the passage of Hurricane Charley.
The distribution effort is co-ordinated by Yvonne Morrison, disaster preparedness co-ordinator for St. Elizabeth, and Major Edward Lions of the Salvation Army.
Lance Neita, public relations officer at Alpart, speaking with The Gleaner on Tuesday, said the company was committed to assisting the residents who were displaced by the effects of the hurricane. He said the relief effort was concentrated mainly in South St. Elizabeth on the Manchester border.
CONTRIBUTION
"Our contribution so far has cost us $350,000 which includes the donation of mattresses, building materials and food supplies among other things," Mr. Neita said. Those receiving relief supplies are from communities such as Duff House, Comma Pen, Ballard's Valley and Dunda Hill.
Mr. Neita also noted that if there was something positive taking place in the community, Alpart wants to be a part of it. He said the company will continue to work with the residents of the affected areas until things are back to normal.
He also announced that Alpart will be working closely with the Rural Agricultural Development Authority and the Jamaica Agricultural Society with an understanding to assist the farmers in South St. Elizabeth who were affected by the hurricane with fertilisers and seeds.
