The call to serve
published: Sunday | August 29, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

A CALL to serve God is a call that cannot go unheeded. It stays with you and literally invades your psyche with such telling force that to dismiss it is to literally dismiss self. A call such as this is spiritual, and since my faith tells me that the spirit is the reality, to deny the call is to commit spiritual suicide.

What do I mean by this? God is a Spirit and those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in Truth. When one is in the light, His light, the truism in that statement is self-evident. My call to serve is based on a spiritual experience and in answering His call I am reminded constantly of the saying "I looked to Him, He looked on me and we were one forever." The magnitude, the beauty and yes, the responsibility to share the good news stays with me and I cannot deny it because His way, His truth and His life have now become a part of me.

One does not come to this realisation by intellectual pursuits. Faith is not an intellectual exercise although the intellect can be used in pursuing God's goals and His will for us. Our Creator in His infinite wisdom ensured that we would come to Him only through faith and a contrite heart with a reliance on His spoken word.

Our faith, the legacy of it and the antecedents of it are nowhere better summed up than in the opening words of the Gospel of St. John "In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not." In answering His call I am seeing His light. I will serve in thought, word and deed wherever and whenever opportunity presents itself .

To God be the glory.

I am, etc.,
