SEPTEMBER 2004 has been proclaimed National Employers' Month by Howard Cooke, Governor-General of Jamaica.
This will be the first time that such a month will be observed in the region. National Employers' Month is the brainchild of the Jamaica Employers' Federation (JEF) and will feature a number of planned events geared specifically at celebrating employers. These activities will focus on issues that affect them and the effective and efficient running of their respective businesses and entities.
In his proclamation, the Governor-General described employers as "the backbone of the Jamaican economy" and encouraged "the people of Jamaica to support the advancement of employers as they continue to provide employment and be the engine of growth for the economy".
Newly-elected JEF president, M. Audrey Hinchcliffe, will launch the month at a press conference today, 2004 in the JEF Conference Room.
The theme for the month is 'Partnerships for Enterprise and Workforce Competitiveness' and the JEF's main partner in this venture is HEART Trust/NTA.
According to JEF Executive Director Jacqueline Coke-Lloyd, it was appropriate and timely that the contribution of employers be publicly recognised and highlighted.
The month of activities would provide an opportunity to demonstrate that employers play a significant role in the process of nation-building, Mrs. Coke-Lloyd said.
