A source of pride
published: Tuesday | September 7, 2004

THE EDITOR, SIR:

DURING A recent assignment in Liberia, I learnt that Jamaica has provided eight police officers to assist in training the Liberian police force. The Jamaican officers are held in high esteem by their foreign counterparts which for me has been a source of pride.

Jamaica should recognise the capability of our police officers, a number of whom have been trained in law, public administration, sociology and business administration. In spite of this training, crime is at an unacceptable level. We are faced with criminals deported from developed countries who employ sophisticated techniques learnt in developed countries. It appears, too, that a significant number of crimes are drug-related.

The public, therefore, needs to assist the police by providing information and being intolerant of criminals and their activities. The government will also need to reassure informants that information provided will be treated in confidence and that they will be given adequate protection.

I am, etc.,
