JAMAICAN ASAFA Powell extended his lead atop the world 100-metre event ranking released by the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) yesterday. Meanwhile, Olympic Games champion Veronica Campbell holds on to her 200m No. 1 ranking. Although she has not compete since her gold medal run in Athens, her 1,317 points kept her ahead of Bahamian Debbie Ferguson (1,302) and Kim Gevaert of Belgium (1,293) who moved one place up to third. Aleen Bailey (1,262) slipped one place to 10th, Beverly McDonald (1,224) moved up four places to 14th, Juliet Camp-bell (1,176) and Peta-Gaye Dowdie (1,173) occupy 35th and 38th positions respectively. Powell, after setting yet another national record of 9.87 (1432 points) on his way to victory in Brussels last Friday, extended his lead with 1,393 points. United States' Shawn Crawford, who suffered at the feet of Powell in Brussels, switched places with fellow American Maurice Greene to second. Crawford, who won the 200m in Athens, moved to 1,374 points seven points ahead of Greene (1,367) and Olympics silver medallist Francis Obikwelu (1,359). MULLINGS DOWN ONE PLACE Dwight Thomas (1228) moved up one place to 16th, Michael Frater (1219) maintained his 19th position while banned sprinter Steve Mullings (1,202) is 24th, down one place. On the women's side, Belarus's Yuliya Nesterenko (1,357) and Frenchwoman Christine Arron (1,328) lead Jamaican and Olympics finalist Bailey (1,322). Another Jamaican finalist at the Olympics, Sherone Simpson (1,287) moved up one place to eighth, just behind Veronica Campbell (1,303). Tayna Law-rence (1,227) jumped seven places to 18th. The men's 200m is headed by Crawford (1364). Frankie Fredericks, 36, the winner in Brussels, moved up to 1,368 points for his 20.20 clocking and advanced five places to sixth. Powell (1,235) is also the best Jamaican, listed at 12th, up from 13th. WILLIAMS-DARLING IS NO. 1 Former world No. 1 Michael Blackwood (1,306) is now at fifth in the 400m. Alleyne Francique heads the field, which also include Davian Clarke (1,304) at sixth, Brandon Simpson (1290) at eighth, Jermaine Gonzales (1,208) at 23rd and Michael McDonald (1,173) at 40th. The women's event (400) has Tonique Williams-Darling (1,411) as its leader, Novlene Williams (1,206) at 22nd and Sandie Richards (1,383) at 38th are the only Jamaicans listed. Olympics finalist Maurice Wignall is the best placed Jamaican in the 110m hurdles. He is listed at fifth with 1,339 points, this behind leader Allen Johnson of the United States (1,417). Chris Pinnock (1,211) is at 26th while Thomas (1203) is at 29th. In the women's 100m hurdles, Delloreen Ennis-London (1,324) maintained her fifth place. Lacena Golding-Clarke (1,316) dropped one place to eighth while Brigitte Foster (1,262) is at 14th. Vonette Dixon (1,221) is at 26th. Danny McFarlane (1,342) dropped one place to third in the men's 400m hurdles ranking while Debbie-Ann Parris (1,241) is at 13th in the women's event. Trecia Smith (1,314) is fifth ranked in the women's triple jump. James Beckford (1,263) maintained his sixth place in the men's long jump.
