GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC:

GUYANA POLICE yesterday shot and killed Kelvin Nero, 36, one of the country's most wanted men during a confrontation in the troublesome east coast village of Buxton.

Nero, also called 'Skirt', was wanted for several offences including the murder of Malika Archer, a state witness.

A police statement said that yesterday morning Nero was 'fatally shot during an armed confrontation' with a police patrol.

It said that he died "while on his way to the Georgetown Public Hospital."

Police have been trying to quell the violence that has flared again on the east coast corridor in the last three weeks with several persons, including a nine-year-old child shot and killed.

Meanwhile, the ruling People's Progressive Party (PPP) said a delegation

including the party's general secretary Donald Ramotar held talks with

Police Commissioner Winston Felix last weekend on the crime situation in the

country.

It said the meeting was at the request of the PPP "to discuss the current

crime situation in the country and more particularly on the East Coast of

Demerara".

"The PPP repeated its public concern regarding the apparent motive of the

criminals being one of terrorism. Attention was drawn to the fact that most

of those recently attacked and killed were people of modest means," the

party said in a statement on Wednesday.

The PPP described the meeting as being "frank and cordial" and said that the

Commissioner had outlined the work being done by the authorities to end the

criminal activities along the east coast.
