THE EDITOR, Sir: AS I sat in my room at the Cave Hill campus, I nervously fidgeted with my phone waiting for a call from home, because for two hours I was unsuccessful in getting a response from my family in Jamaica. Prior to the hurricane I had spoken to them and they were in high spirits that things would be fine, but I was not so sure. Ivan had just passed Barbados and the wind was extremely high even though it didn't hit us and then the damage to Grenada gave me more than enough cause for concern. Despite the damage that the island received I think most of us are by now aware of how intensely lucky and blessed we are and for how much we have to be thankful. As my family, friends and countrymen begin the recovery effort, please rest assured that those of us overseas are ever mindful of your needs and you are always in our hearts. Just before the hurricane was supposed to hit Jamaica a group of law and meteorology students who are studying here in Barbados were praying that God would protect the island. I mourn with those who have lost loved ones and I implore each of my countrymen to go to the aid of his neighbour in need. Now more than ever we need to band together to heal our land. Hopefully, the criminal elements will take note of how fragile man is and recognize the senselessness of their actions and that this might be a time for reflection for them, too, so that some of the carnage that is happening in our beloved country may cease. Let us be kind to one another in this our time of need. God bless Jamaica. I am, etc., HAROLD MALCOLM bruce_26@hotmail.com Sherlock Hall, UWI Cave Hill Campus St. Michael, Barbados
