Ivan dampens pockets

HURRICANE IVAN has not only left hundreds of persons in distress and shambles, but also caused selectors and disc jockeys to miss out on some potentially big shows that were planned for last weekend.

As they pick up the pieces, the consensus is that they hope the island can be restored to a state of normality quickly, as they remain hopeful that their losses will not extend beyond the coming weekend.

Selector Tony Matterhorn had very few big shows slated on Ivan's special weekend, as it was all about Elephant Man's 'Birthday Bash' that would have been held at the Mas Camp Village, Oxford Road, New Kingston, on Saturday, September 11.

"That weekend was just about Ele. Mi did come back from England di Monday fi prepare fi Ele birthday. Tru a back to school time, a did really dat and the launch of Anthony B new album did a gwaan fi da weekend deh still," Matterhorn said.

In addition to those two shows, Matterhorn said other regular weekly activities like 'Uptown Mondays', 'Weddy Weddy Wednesday' and 'Passa Passa' got the brunt of the hurricane's blow.

Dancehall selectors Razz and Biggy say they only had a few local shows cancelled due to Hurricane Ivan. They are counting their blessings, as they said the weekend before Ivan struck, they had done a show in Atlanta and the loss from missing overseas shows would have been greater than from cancelled local shows.

However, there were still a few local events that the selectors had to miss out on due to the hurricane and Razz says he hopes that things can return to normal so that other events scheduled for this weekend can get on the way.

"'Ruption' (a show slated to be held at UWI) was supposed to be Friday night gone and wi did have a ting up a Bull Bay Saturday gone. We also have something over Passage Fort in Portmore, called 'Sky Mondays', held every Monday, but dat put off fi now, depending on when we get back light. If light nuh come back, some other events scheduled for this weekend nah guh can gwaan," Razz explained.

Hurricane Ivan was not only a hard hit for the selectors and disc jocks, but for some entertainers like Elephant Man, who was getting things in high gear for his birthday celebrations, and Anthony B, who was gearing up for the launch of his new album.

Elephant Man's manager, Q-45, said that Ele's birthday bash had been postponed until sometime in October, but the date is yet to be confirmed.

Anthony B, who was to have the official launch of his latest album, Untouchable, on Sunday, September 12, says he had to re-schedule.

"Wi did haffi re-schedule fi di 17th, Sunday coming. We starting at six in the evening and end at 12 midnight, right in the streets of Knutsford Boulevard. Apart from dat still, mi alright, giving God thanks seh mi nuh get no major damage," Anthony B said.
