Cayman hit hard by 'Ivan'
published: Tuesday | September 21, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

HURRICANE IVAN did a lot of damage here in Jamaica and people lost their lives and their homes, which is a great source of worry and grief. However, it is much worse in terms of total destruction in the Cayman Islands.

Grand Cayman, where my nephew lives, was devastated and is reeling with shock and need at this time. Most of the buildings are destroyed, there is no power and water, and I do not know why there is practically no coverage by the CNN or any other news media of this little archipelago which faced Ivan like David facing Goliath without a slingshot, and came out groaning on its back. Even Cuba got more mention from the USA.

Even the BBC has little or nothing to say and Cayman 'belongs' to England. I am the only one who my nephew and my daughter there are able to
contact on their cell phones, and I can hear the exhaustion, fear and horror in their voices. We in the Caribbean live as if we are in isolated little kingdoms; we do not look after each other, and that is the downfall of this region.

I am, etc.,
