THE EDITOR, Sir:
I DO not usually agree with the Prime Minister, however, on this occasion I must commend him on his forthright and decisive manner to invoke emergency powers to counter the criminal fringe who sought to pillage the country through looting.
The Prime Minister anticipated correctly and, by so doing,
dissuaded criminal elements. The success of this initiative is borne out from media reports, which
suggest sparse conditions of
looting.
JUSTIFICATION
Insofar as the Opposition Leader's reaction is concerned, I think it is quite justifiable only that if the PM had waited to analyse the extent of the damage, looting would have been widespread
and perhaps with far-reaching
consequences.
On another matter, surrounding the JPS's lack of alacrity
in restoring power to main
communities which, from a
cursory glance, did not suffer major infrastructural damage i.e. lines, transformers, poles, etc., the JPS in my opinion is still 'third-world' in culture, and needs to upgrade like their counterpart Cable & Wireless in providing first-class service.
