Tougher inspections ahead for ships, says
published: Tuesday | September 21, 2004

US Coast Guard

SHIPS COMING from a number of ports where security is deemed inadequate will face tougher inspections, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has warned.

Ships that have called on these ports may find themselves facing more intense examinations and other possible delays.

Carriers can reduce the level of action if its ships establish higher security levels during port calls, execute a Declaration of Security, log all security actions, and report action taken to the USCG Captain of the Port (COTP) prior to arrival in the U.S., officials said.

Ports found to have not met the USCG's standards include Albania, Benin, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kiribati, Lebanon, Liberia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Nauru, Nigeria, Serbia and Montenegro, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands and Suriname.
