Dec 9 court date for Adams, Kraal cops
published: Friday | September 24, 2004

By Barbara Gayle, Staff Reporter

SENIOR SUPERINTENDENT Reneto Adams and the other five policemen charged with the murder of four civilians at Kraal, Clarendon, on May 7 last year, are to return to the Home Circuit on December 9, when it is expected that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions will provide all documents in the case.

A mention date was set in the case when the men appeared in court yesterday.

K. Churchill Neita, Q.C., one of the defence lawyers, said he was asking for a mention date for December 9 when it is expected that all the statements in case would be served on the defence. Mr. Neita said the statements in the case were voluminous and the defence had so far received two bundles a few days ago.

DOCUMENTS SERVED

Crown Counsel Jenice Nelson-Brown said the defence had been served one-third of the documents. She also applied for a mention date.

Hazel Harris extended the policemen's bail and told them that she hoped that the additional documents would be served by December 9.

The other five policemen charged are Corporal Patrick Cooke, Constables Shane Lyons, Roderick Colleyard, Lynford Gordon and Devon Bernard.

The Crown is alleging that on May 7 last year a police party, led by SSP Adams, former head of the disbanded Crime Management Unit (CMU), went to Kraal in search of Bashington Douglas, otherwise called 'Chen Chen'. The policemen went to a house in the district where they allegedly killed Lewena Thompson, Angella Richards, Kirk Gordon and Matthew James during a shoot-out.

The policemen are on bail and one of the conditions of their bail is that they must report to the Commissioner's Office on Fridays.

Adams is being represented by Mr. Neita and Jacqueline Samuels-Brown, while Colleyard is being represented by Ms. Neita-Robertson. Lyons is being represented by Oswest Senior-Smith, while Gordon is being represented by attorneys-at-law Earl Witter and Debra Martin. Mr. Neita is also representing Bernard, while Witter is also representing Cooke.
