No school since 'Ivan'
published: Friday | September 24, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Both my nieces, ages 7 and 8 attend the Dunrobin Primary School. Today, approximately two weeks after Hurricane Ivan passed over our shores, they along with several of their peers from grades 1-4 have not returned to school to resume their education because their school was not spared the wrath of the hurricane.

So badly damaged is this school that only students in grades 5-6 can be accommodated for daily classes albeit for reduced hours. All of the grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 have lost their entire roofs and to compound the problem, looters have made off with the zinc sheetings.

This school is in the heart of one of Kingston's most popular business districts bordering Red Hills Road and Dunrobin Avenue. It would appear that even the school's administrators are overwhelmed by the situation and are unable to come up with a solution if but even a temporary one.

I therefore implore the nation's business community especially those in and around the environs of the Dunrobin Primary School, to assist the school in effecting the necessary urgent repairs so that the children of this school may resume their normal education process.

I am, etc.,

ENELRA
