Farmers to get relief materials
published: Saturday | September 25, 2004

THE JAMAICA Agricultural Society (JAS) says it will commence distributing agricultural relief items to farmers who suffered as a result of Hurricanes Charley and Ivan, on Wednesday.

The association has so far received 100 bags of fertilisers and 100 pounds of assorted seeds from Antilles Chemical Company, in addition to 200 pounds of seeds from Agro Grace.

The Jamaica Public Service Company had donated $500,000, while the Jamaica Manufacturers' Association had given $50,000 to assist the farmers.

The distribution will first commence in south St. Elizabeth, which was hardest hit by Hurricane Charley and subsequently Hurricane Ivan, according to JAS President Senator Norman Grant.

He also said that the JAS would be intensifying its tillage operation in the parish through its Tractor Tillage Programme.

So far, St. Catherine, Manchester, St. Mary, Portland, Clarendon and St. Elizabeth have benefited.

In the meantime, persons and institutions may continue to make donations for relief of farmers through the JAS Development Trust Fund, account number 061028072, at any branch of National Commercial Bank.
