'Ivan' spin-off: compost heaps
published: Saturday | September 25, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ALL OVER Jamaica now, there are thousands of heaps of leaves. I ponder the idea of these leaves being appropriately stored with a view of them being allowed to rot and consequently become nutrients for plants. Maybe they could be stored in an area with water so that the decaying process could be hastened.

In another three months these leaves, now regarded by many as rubbish, could become very worthwhile and be regarded as one of the few spin-offs of Hurricane Ivan. To put them to fire is a massive waste and pollutant. The leaves should be made into a compost and ultimately be beneficial to the environment. They should be converted into something of value.

I am, etc.,
