THE EDITOR, Sir:HURRICANE IVAN has just taught the Caribbean the benefits of Caribbean political unity. If the governments of all the Caribbean countries that were going to be affected wanted to send some of their citizens to other Caribbean countries, they could not have done so because of immigration issues. We certainly could not send them to America, Britain or any country we wanted to. But, under a united Caribbean, this could have been possible.
SEEKING REFUGE
Why shouldn't citizens be able to run to Cuba, Haiti, Venezuela, Bermuda, Bahamas, French and Dutch Antilles, Suriname, or Guyana to seek refuge until it was safe to return? We keep separating ourselves from each other to the detriment of our brothers and sisters across the Caribbean and our own citizens in our country.
Should we not be fighting to unite the Caribbean and separate ourselves from the colonial 'gods'? We as Caribbean people must demand that union. Marcus Garvey, says "Jamaica, will never know its full potential until its back is against the wall." Well that was just not a Jamaican warning, it was a Caribbean warning as well.
I am, etc.,
