Leave the top soil alone!
published: Sunday | September 26, 2004

THE EDITOR Sir:

I DO hope that Jamaica will take heed to the tragedy of deaths caused by Tropical Storm Jeanne in Haiti. Based on the media reports here in the United States, Haiti's tragedies caused by Jeanne was increased due to the removal of the top soil. More mudslides occurred due to the lack of (the removal of) trees in Haiti.

Jamaica has to learn from this tragedy and stop removing too many trees from the island's parishes. We need to do more conservation and preserve the trees and land of our island home.

I am, etc.,
