C'down, Wolmer's put record on the line
published: Monday | September 27, 2004

By Daraine Luton, Freelance Writer

WOLMER'S AND Camperdown are the only teams with a perfect winning record in this season's ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus Corporate Area Manning Cup schoolboy football competition.

Today, it could change as both Wolmer's and Camperdown will this evening put their enviable record on the line.

Camperdown, already with three wins, go for victory number four at the expense of Meadowbrook whom they will play at Meadowbrook. Having not won the Manning Cup since 1982, Camperdown boast a very impressive unit, making them one of this year's 'dark horses'. They have so far scored eight goals from three matches, while conceding two one to St. Jago in a 3-1 win and one to Penwood while etching a similar scoreline.

While Camperdown are sitting with ultimate ease atop Group B, they cannot afford to lay back and relax as their opponents could use the opportunity to unseat them. Meadowbrook, with two wins and a draw from three games, are sitting second with seven points, three more than Penwood and St. Jago who are locked on four points.

St. Jago, unlucky campaigners last year after they were eliminated at the quarter-final stage even though they did not lose a game all season, can consider themselves stranded on the Pedro Bank Keys with a hurricane approaching. Today, Penwood are their opponents and depending on how well the Monk Street boys apply themselves, their longevity in the competition could become endangered.

Meanwhile, over in Group F, 10-time champions Wolmer's are on a mission to take the Manning Cup back to Heroes circle, a feat they last achieved in 1994. Standing between them and a fourth win are Greater Portmore. If the run of play this season is anything to go by Wolmer's, while not expecting to flood Greater Portmore, are expected to race to 12 points when the final whistle blows.

Kingston College and Dunoon Technical should fancy their chances of securing an initial victory. Both will meet at the 'Purples' North Street homeground, where KC secured its only point in a 1-1 draw.

They were embarrassed 5-0 by Wolmer's on Friday, and must be hoping for a grand rebound.
