By Anthony Foster, Freelance WriterJAMAICA'S GOLD medal winner, Alphanso Cunning-ham, will seek to crown himself in glory once more when he returns to competition today at the 12th Summer Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece.
Cunningham, who produced a world record performance to win the F53 discus gold on Saturday, will participate in the javelin where his class will be merged with F52 class athletes.
Jamaica's chef de mission, Suzanne Harris, said: "We are extremely proud of his performance."
The medal ceremony for Cunningham took place yesterday.
His world record throw of 25.18m broke the previous mark of 23.43m that Cunningham had set in Mar del Plata, Argentina last year December. The gold was also Jamaica's first since the 1988 Paralympic Games in South Korea.
T. OI of Japan (25.03m) and M. Hasan of Egypt (23.72m) were second and third respectively.
Another Jamaican athlete, Sylvia Grant, who competed in the female discus event on Saturday also, will seek greater success in the women's javelin.
Grant, a class F57 athlete, will again compete against athletes in the F56 and F58 divisions in today's action.
A points system was used to determine the winners and Grant's throw of 22.69 (959 points) gave her 11th position out of 18 athletes. Brazilian F56 class athlete S. Guimaraes won with a throw of 24.30m (1138 points), a Paralympic record. Second place went L. Li of China (F57) with a throw of 24.95m (1054 points), world record for class F57 and A. Khodayari of Islamic Republic of Iran (F57) with 24.86m (1050 points).
