Lesson from cricket on Caribbean unity
published: Wednesday | September 29, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS interesting that Barbados, the island that is far ahead of the other Caribbean islands on the human development report, should be pushing unitedly for the integration of the Caribbean into one social and economic unit, while Jamaica, a country much further down the human development list, should be divided when it comes to Caribbean integration.

While enjoying a much higher standard of living, Barbadians, both Opposition and the party in power, are united in the vision of the "many nations one Caribbean concept." Jamaica, suffering from increasing crime and poverty, is not united in the desire to have one Caribbean economic zone.

One wonders what accounts for the difference in mindset. It is interesting that it is two Barbadians who acted as a team and stood firm and brought home the ICC Champions Trophy for the West Indies.

Perhaps it is time for our leaders who are opposed to the concept of a single market to take a lesson from cricket and recognise that the Caribbean as a united team can accomplish much more than has been done.

I am, etc.,

ALLAN CARTER
