Mr Knight extremely ill-advised

THE EDITOR, Sir
MINISTER KNIGHT'S statements concerning 'Narrowing the gap' between richer and poorer countries seems extremely ill-advised. Such things can only be accomplished by an industrious populace and entrepreneurship.
The leading example the world has seen, it seems to me, of 'narrowing the gap' between countries by governmental decree, is the old Soviet Union. We all know how well that did not work. Every country that does succeed in raising its circumstances proves that it can be done. Having been to Jamaica numerous times, and having many dear friends in your wonderful land, leads me to believe that the problems Jamaica faces (as well as the other Caribbean nations we've visited) stem from the Government and the people.
That cannot be changed by regulation of other countries and their commerce.
I am, etc.,
