A time for reflection
published: Thursday | September 30, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WITH THE passage of Hurricane Ivan I think this is a good time for the Jamaican to do real in-depth searching of his soul. We are violent people. The way of peace we know not; the way of peace we love not. The Bible says that the man who loves violence, Jehovah hates.

The prophet Micah says, "Woe to them that devise inequity, and work evil upon their beds! When the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hands." (Micah 2:1)

Like all people everywhere the Jamaican seeks and dreams of El Buen Gobierno. His dream will remain elusive unless he really decides to change his ways. When people are wicked God allows evil men to rule over them and when evil men are in power crime increases.

How God dealt with ancient Israel is the same way that he deals with modern man. He sends a Rehoboam with a whip or a Jeroboam with a scorpion; regardless of his political label it well not matter.

In Genesis God destroyed an entire group of people because they were violent. "... For the earth is filled with violence through them; and behold, I will destroy them with the earth." (Genesis 6:13)

The faithful Abels and the Zachariases of this nation whose blood was spilled needlessly have placed a curse on us.

If we do not change we will be destroyed and it will not be very long in coming.

I am, etc.,

P. HOGAN
