Beware of deceivers
published: Thursday | September 30, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I ADVISE all my young people to be aware of deceitful men going around indicating that they can help them to go to 'foreign' or get work for them. It is not true. They only want to abuse you sexually. If someone approaches you with such an offer, ask them why and what is in it for them.

I warn you to be on your guard, in particular employers who behave as if they prefer you by giving you extra pay or gifts for no reason.

I appeal to parents and guardians to be more sensitive to this issue. Please teach your child/children not to take anything from anyone who touches them on their bottom or private parts and tells them not to talk. Let the child know it is wrong and they are to tell someone about it or report it to the police. Too long our children have been abused, even in the very homes they live, at school, and in our communities and in our youth groups.

I want the public and police to be aware of these complaints and to take them seriously. Sometimes we wonder why our children can't learn, or behave strangely. It is because they sometimes are abused physically and mentally.

I am, etc.,

ODETTE L. STEWART
