Miss Jamaica, wrong decision
published: Sunday | October 3, 2004
THE EDITOR, Sir:I HOPE you will publish my letter. I am not a young person, I am 66 years old. I have been watching the crowning of the Miss Jamaica over the years, as a matter of fact from 1953, when the outstanding Evelyn Andrade won the title and then went on to Trinidad to capture the West Indies title.
Never have I seen such a wrong decision like this year's crowning. The second and the third placements would have deserved the title more. I hope the Spartan Health Club will never ever use this type of judging ever again. It is the first time, and it should be the last. The second and the third winners were so disappointed at the decision, you could see it on their faces. This Miss Jamaica 2004 will not reach the semi-finals, much less the top five in the Miss World competition. The organisers are very lucky that the public did not throw boxes of juice onto the stage like the year when Lisa Mahfood was crowned.
Jamaicans take the crowning of the Miss Jamaica very seriously. It is a national event. Mr. Mickey Haughton James had better be careful or lots of girls are going to lose interest in the contest.
I have never been so disappointed in the winner over the years, since 1953.
I am, etc.,
Disgruntled
