Hats off to Ian Boyne
published: Sunday | October 3, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

FOR THE last couple of years the 'In Focus' section of The Sunday Gleaner, more specifically the columnist Ian Boyne, has engaged my interest. Boyne's style of writing can only be described as being of subtle simplicity juxtaposed with intellectual wit. Boyne takes you on a journey. It is not often that I read any piece of literature where I can hardly wait to get to the next line much less put it down.

With his writing he jerks you out of the mindless lethargy that is so common in our society and stimulates you into feeling passionate about those issues close to home, making you want to take a proactive stance with a desire to become a part of the solution, and even make you care about far afield issues.

Some of my favourites are his articles on the war in Iraq, UWI research and discussion on crime, to name a few. Boyne undoubtedly adds something to the news and indeed The Gleaner. Boyne's appeal is in the way he forces the reader to face the issues head on. What makes Boyne's analysis and commentary so gripping? Plainly put, it's his ability to achieve true honesty, with bald writing, seemingly by separating the issues, then carrying out a reasoned breakdown of the core of these issues. The extensive research, which is shown in the issues presented in its current and historical context, along with the numerous references to renowned authorities in the news reports, editorials and journals, all laced with examples.

'Profile' is the programme that the ordinary Jamaican would associate him with. To a programme that is celebrating over a decade of broadcasting I must say hats off to Boyne and to Television Jamaica for enduring. Profile continues to stand as the only local television programme that has consistently bridged the gap with the ordinary guest and larger than life figures.

I am, etc.,

STACEY BRADY
