THE EDITOR, Sir:
I USUALLY enjoy Melville Cooke's intelligent and witty columns. However, I am bored by his obsession with homosexuality. Gays and lesbians enjoy their lifestyle and have every right to defend themselves against all threats, real or imagined. James Baldwin, Garcia Lorca, Tchaikovksy and many other talented people closer to home whom I shall leave nameless were (and are) gay.
Melville, I wish you would turn your attention to the widespread sexual abuse of under age girls. Are you as bothered, repelled and disgusted by grown men having sex with under age girls as you are by gays and lesbians? If so, please share your outrage at this destructive national pastime with readers one of these days.
In fact, I wish under age Jamaican girls had a public campaigning group to defend them with as much vigour, style, relentlessness and intrepidly as Outrage! defends gay men.
As for the DJ lyricists, I dare them to tackle corruption, injustice and down-pression in Jamaica as explicitly and with the same vigour as they tackle gays. They thought gays were a soft target but now know otherwise.
I am, etc.,
SOME OF THE NICEST MEN I KNOW ARE GAY
