Make road signs clearer
published: Thursday | October 7, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THE MARKINGS in the intersections of some roadways seem to lead to some confusion as to the liability of the motorist, who is left stranded when the lights change.

The solution is a simple one. The sign showing 'Do Not Block Intersection' is not the appropriate one. The sign should read 'Do Not Enter Intersection Unless Exit Is Clear'. Simply put, the sign tells the motorist that unless there is a space on the other side for his vehicle, he is not to proceed. In such a
scenario, if he is later stranded in the intersection, it must be that he has not heeded the sign.

With the huge increase in traffic flow the Traffic Authorities may well consider my suggestion worthwhile.

I am, etc.,
