Hear the call of the students
published: Thursday | October 7, 2004

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ONCE AGAIN, students at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona campus stormed the Undercroft. Tumultuous uproars of 'No deregistration!' were sounded with great vibrancy. Although the demonstration was quite peaceful, the students' voices must not be taken for granted. Some students are led to believe that the university is set on creating an elitist society, one in which the poor are once again neglected and denied the benefits of a tertiary education, while only those who can afford to pay benefit from the system.

The UWI needs to re-register those students who are victims of the deregistration process and consider implementing sustainable policies that will enable students to make proper payment arrangements. This I consider to be a more sophisticated approach instead of closing the door in the faces of our future mothers and fathers.

Suffice it to say, students whose parents are employed as administrators in the university are allowed to attend classes free of cost and are in no way affected by the deregistering process.

I am, etc.,

OLIVER BECKFORD

(final year UWI student)
