THE ABILITY of Jamaica's security forces to tackle the island's flourishing drug trade and spiralling crime rate is to be enhanced through a training initiative to be administered by the United Kingdom armed forces.
DISCLOSED DURING A TOUR
Adam Ingram, State Minister with responsibility for the United Kingdom's Armed Forces, disclosed during a tour of the HMS Richmond yesterday that he had met with National Security Minister, Dr. Peter Phillips, to discuss possibilities for "training the Jamaican Defence Force and the law enforcement agencies to be able to bring those people and their society to justice and to squeeze their organisational capabilities."
Mr. Ingram, who was on a one day visit to the island, pointed out that the narcotics trade was not only harming Jamaica, but was having a damaging impact on the U.K. as well. While not divulging details of the training initiative, the U.K. State Minister said the training exercise will be more "deeper and more intense than the ones we've had before."
The British naval vessel, which has been in the Caribbean since July, was docked five miles off the Kingston waterfront after sailing from hurricane ravaged Grenada and Grand Cayman where it distributed relief supplies and administered technical and medical assistance.
