XLCR down JC again
published: Friday | October 8, 2004

RICARDO MAKYN, Staff Photographer - Jamaica College's Dwayne Williams controls the ball while being closely marked by Excelsior's Jermaine Gardener during their ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning Cup game at the Excelsior grounds. Excelsior won 2-0.

EXCELSIOR HIGH School took a giant step towards defending their ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning Cup title when they, for the second time this season, defeated Jamaica College (JC), this time with a 2-0 scoreline.

Excelsior, playing at home, got their fans into the game very early by scoring in the 11th minute from the boot of Jermaine Gardener. The defending champions doubled their tally in the 35th from a Ricardo Haynes effort.

From the outset, JC looked a beaten team, they strolled into the park and never got things going. Excelsior, on the other hand, looked a solid unit and set about killing off the game as a contest early.

JC coach Glen Laing could not account for his team's lacklustre performance and had immediately ordered a training camp to rethink his team's position.

"I think we weren't settled today. I think Excelsior have been throwing things at us but we didn't settle down today. We came out a little flat but I'm not sure what caused that," said a bemused Laing.

Excelsior's coach, Leebert Halliman, was pleased with what he considered "a professional performance."

"We got two early goals and after that it was just a matter of containing them and ensuring that they didn't score," he said.
