Heritage Fest 2K4 officially launched
published: Wednesday | October 13, 2004

By Teino Evans, Staff Reporter

YESTERDAY MARKED the official launch of the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission's (JCDC) Heritage Fest which will be held this coming Heroes Day (Monday, October 18) at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre.

At the official press launch, held inside the JCDC board room, Minister of Education, Youth and Culture, the Honourable Maxine Henry-Wilson collected a cheque on behalf of the JCDC, from sponsors, Capital and Credit Financial Group, which have committed themselves to little over a million dollars in support of this year's Heritage Fest.

In accepting the kind donation, Minister Henry-Wilson said that she wanted to commend both the JCDC and sponsors, Capital and Credit, for the fine work that they had been doing in helping to promote Jamaica's cultural heritage, as these celebrations were not only relevant but important.

"Our National Heritage is the foundation, the path from which we have come. It defines us, tells who we are and what we are. It reflects the strengths of survival, resilience and determination," she said.

Ryland T. Campbell, Chairman of the Capital and Credit Financial Group, in giving the Keynote address, said that Capital and Credit has always recognised and celebrated the role of culture in the country's development.

"Sponsorships such as these, are important to us, because of the culture and history of Jamaica that is involved. We believe that in order to manage for the future, one must understand the past," Campbell said.

This year's Heritage Fest will begin from 10 a.m. and will see an array of cultural activities. Among them will be effigies of the National Heroes, schools depicting skits about the National Heroes, storytelling from India, Africa, China, Europe and the Caribbean, traditional folk dances and Jamaican cuisine.
