Three places left for the taking
published: Thursday | October 14, 2004

By Paul-Andre Walker, Staff Reporter

THE SECOND round of the ISSA Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning Cup is on the horizon with nine of the 12 places having already been claimed.

Today Groups D and E have rescheduled games.

In Group D the only game will be between St. Catherine and Calabar. That game is significant because both teams are still in with a chance of qualifying behind St. George's.

St. Catherine are in third place, three points behind Calabar, who are on ten. A win for the St. Catherine school would put them on an even keel with Calabar but with a game in hand. With three games to go that could mean St. Catherine could be a win away from qualification.

DISMAL POSITION

Calabar will have one game to play after their match-up against St. Catherine, making their position dismal if they lose. While very little is known about St. Catherine, they have beaten big teams.

They beat Vauxhall 3-1 and they downed Donald Quarrie 2-0 in their return game. This is after losing out to the boys from the east in the first leg which might mean they are a team on the improve, so Calabar must watch out.

In Group E, Bridgeport play against Campion while Mona meet Ardenne. The first of the two games is the more important because Mona, who have already amassed 20 points for the top spot, are safe from relegation to the third position and are through to the next round. Bridgeport however, still have some work to do. They did much of the hard work by getting by Clan Carthy in a 2-0 affair that saw them leap-frog the former No. 1 team in the group and take a very slim two-point lead. That could be erased in a jiffy if Campion can recreate the kind of performance they put up in their opening game when they dished out a 1-0 beating to the favoured Bridgeport contingent.

Bridgeport are fortunate enough to have a game after this one and thus a chance to make amends if they do not get the job done against Campion since Clan Carthy only have one game left and can only go a point ahead of Bridgeport.
