New exhibit at Mutual Gallery
Artist Allison West-Martin will host a solo exhibition at the Mutual Gallery and Art Centre, 2 Oxford Road, Kingston 5, opening on October 19 at 7:00 p.m. Titled, 'Stairways to Heaven', the show will be officially opened by the Mexican Ambassador to Jamaica, Benito Andion Sancho, and will run until November 5.
Art workshop
Crota Art Gallery presents an art appreciation workshop at 20 Tucker Avenue between October 25-27 with Professor Eugenio D'Melon, tutor at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts (EMCVPA).
The gallery is also hosting a pre-Christmas exhibition up to November 6. Works on display include artists Barrington Watson, Michael Elliot, Ewan McAnuff, Ken Spencer, Donovan Walters, Courtney Morgan, Webster Campbell and Andre Graham, among others.
Poetry Society
of Jamaica
Poet A-Dizko Simba will have her day on October 26 when she launches her debut album 'Crazi Ladi Dayz' at the Poetry Society of Jamaica Fellowship scheduled to be held at the EMCVPA amphitheatre, starting at 7:30 p.m. A-Diziko is of Nigerian and Jamaican parentage, and works in Jamaica as a story-teller, workshop facilitator and writer.
'Monuments'
at EMCVPA
The Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts (EMCVPA), in collaboration with the National Gallery of Jamaica, invites the public to the opening of 'Monumental History', an art exhibition focusing on post independence monuments in Jamaica.
The exhibition is a smaller version of one previously staged at the National Gallery last year, and is the third staging of the show, having also been staged at the Montego Bay Civic Centre. The exhibition will run October 29, in the Cage College Art Gallery, 1 Arthur Wint Drive, Kingston 5. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Drama at Philip Sherlock Centre
The University Players continues to stage 'One of Our Sons...' at the Philip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at the University of the West Indies, Mona, St. Andrew. Written by Trinidadian Godfrey Sealy, the play deals with issues relating to HIV/AIDS and the family. Creative writing awards
The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) will present awards in its annual creative writing competition on November 3 at the Hilton Kingston Hotel, starting at 6:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
Two artists at Grosvenor
An exhibition of new works by two artists continues at Grosvenor Galleries, 1 Grosvenor Terrace, Kingston 8. Artist D.J. Henry presents the 'Dami Series', while Richard Von White shows 'Dwellings'.
NGJ retrospective
The 'Rainbow Valley' retrospective continues at the National Gallery of Jamaica (NGJ), 12 Ocean Boulevard, Kingston Mall in downtown Kingston. The exhibition, which opened in August, is in honour of the late intuitive artist Everald Brown, and will run through to November 9.
