published: Sunday | October 17, 2004

John Myers Jr., Staff Reporter

AT LEAST 10 people were killed in separate incidents in Kingston, St. Catherine and St. James between Friday night and yesterday morning, bringing the number of people slain since the start of the year to more than 1,050.

Details on some of the killings including a double murder in Cumberland, St. Catherine, were unavailable at press time last night. However, the police's information agency, the Con-stabulary Com-munication Net-work (CCN) reported yesterday that five people including a teenager were killed within a four-hour period in the Corporate Area while an elderly man was murdered in Montego Bay, St. James.

In the first incident, a 48-year-old mason was shot and killed and a 50-year-old woman shot and injured by gunmen in the Kingston 13 area. The dead man was identified as Winston Nelson, otherwise called Louie, of Henley Road, Kingston 11.

DIED ON THE SPOT

The CCN said Nelson was in the vicinity of West Avenue and Spanish Town Road about 7:00 p.m. when he was approached by a group of gunmen who pulled their guns and fired several shots which hit him. He died on the spot. The 50 year-old woman, who was at her stall, received gunshot wounds to both legs and was taken to hospital where she was treated.

An hour later, 16-year-old Kevin Brown was shot and killed by a lone gunman at the intersection of West Main Drive and Grenmeade Road, Kingston 20.

About 10:25 p.m. two men were shot and killed by gunmen at a night club on Molynes Road, Kingston 10.

The dead men were identified as Athol Dixon, also known as Orlando, 18, of Australia Road, Kingston 11 and a man known only as 'Jah Mike' of a Molynes Road address.

Five minutes later, a 28-year-old tiler, identified as Martin McFarlane of a Kingston 20 address was shot dead by gunmen on Headley Avenue.

HOODLUMS

Also killed was Delvin Elliott, 23, of Arnett Gardens, Kingston 12. He was reportedly pounced on by hoodlums who shot him several times as he was walking along Seivwright Pathway. He died on the spot.

In Montego Bay, 71-year-old Norris Bennett, otherwise called 'Rushy', was shot and killed at his home in Gutters District, Retirement, St. James about 1:20 a.m. yesterday.
