THE EDITOR, Sir:
AS A person with certificates, diplomas, degrees, 40 years of experience and, more importantly, a whole heap of education, I invite David Michael Samuels the writer of your "Letter of the Day" in the Sunday Gleaner of October 10, 2004 to publicly answer the following questions:
1. Why should an employer make any further contribution to the education system i.e. at high school or HEART when he is already paying: (a) HEART Tax; (b) Education tax.
2. Why should an employer make any further contribution to health, environmental and social welfare when he is already paying NHT (tax), NIS (tax), GCT (tax) and Income Tax?
3. Is the letter writer aware that there is no country/state in the world that has the combination of 1&2 above and that the cost of them can only be recovered from the price of the product or service?
4. What does he consider an "attractive salary package" and for what work/output?
5. What does self-development, upward social mobility and financial prosperity mean and why should the employer be responsible for that?
Finally, having read Mr. Samuel's letter several times I can understand why with all of his qualifications he is unable to obtain a suitable job. The answer is he believes like most of my fellow countrymen/women that somebody else is responsible for him: foreign, de government, de parish councils, de employer, de parents and de don.
I look forward to Mr. Samuels' reply.
I am, etc.,
