St Thomas: wait and see
published: Sunday | October 17, 2004

St. Thomas:

THE UPCOMING election for leadership in the Jamaica Labour Party between Bruce Golding and Pearnel Charles is gaining momentum. As the November 6 date draws closer, the fate of these two men will be decided by delegates and Councillors. Some Councillors feel that they can predict the outcome while others have a "wait and see" attitude.

Councillor Harold Brown from Whitehorses division in St. Thomas was forthright. He said he would definitely back Pearnel Charles. Then he gave reasons.

"I have worked with him as a trade unionist and area supervisor; I have also worked with him as a Member of Parliament. I have watched his growth and development and I am aware of his commitment and contribution to his fellowmen and nation building. I think he is capable of leading."

Another Councillor who did not wish to be identified said the election issue was a "sensitive one."

"Both are fine gentlemen and I'll back anyone who wins," he quipped.

"I will back Mr. Bruce Golding," said Councillor Gary Henry from the Yallahs area.

Councillor Brown believes that the majority of the Councillors are in favour of Charles, suggesting that delegate support was 80 per cent for Charles in the eastern section of St. Thomas, and 20 per cent for Golding, while in the western section it would be 65 per cent for Golding and a 35 per cent for Charles.
