Daraine Luton, Freelance WriterMEADOWBROOK YESTERDAY ended Camperdown's 100 per cent win record in the Pepsi/Sports Plus Manning Cup, beating them 1-0 at Vauxhall.
The hero was Dwayne Smith who scored four minutes from time, driving a 28-yard free kick through the hands of goalkeeper Andrew Land to lift his team into the second round of the Manning Cup.
"I am feeling very great about it because we have been training for it and to achieve this it is just spectacular," Meadowbrook's assistant coach, Kevin Bryan, said.
"The players knew they had to get at Camperdown. They came out here and they did just that; they played to instructions, played behind the ball and that was really a great free kick."
OBVIOUS DISAPPOINTMENT
However, for Camperdown's coach Barrington Gaynor, the defeat was an obvious disappointment.
"We really wanted to win the game because we were on a nine-game winning streak and we never ever want to break a winning streak," Gaynor said.
"I don't credit Meadowbrook for the win. I credit us for their win. We got a lot of chances and we did not made use of them," Gaynor added.
Caught in a tight spot yesterday, Meadowbrook needed to win to assure themselves of a second-round berth knowing that a St. Jago win over Penwood would upset their apple cart.
Meanwhile, St. Jago will not defend their Walker Cup title as although they beat Penwood 2-0, they failed to advance to the second round of the Manning Cup - a prerequisite for playing in the Walker Cup. Also, Calabar and St. Catherine will have to wait a bit longer to decide the second qualifier from Group D as their game was washed out.
In other games, Donald Quarrie beat Vauxhall 3-1, Denham Town registered their first win of the season, beating Tarrant 3-1. In a rescheduled Group E game, Clan Carthy beat Inswood 1-0 but will not qualify for the second round as Bridgeport, who are also on 17 points, have a superior goal difference and a game against Ardenne in hand.
